Umarex’s Top Airguns in 2020

For those that love airguns, they are going to know the name Umarex USA.  Pistol shooters will know Umarex for their highly realistic pistol replicas.  Hunters will know them for their PCP products and their new Arrow Shooters.  Back yard shooters just starting will know them for their affordable but functional break-barrel airguns.

The short story about Umarex is that they have an airgun for all shooters and all occasions.  Here are their top 5 for 2020.

Glock 17 Gen 4
Glock 17 Gen. 4

No. 5 – Glock 17 Gen. 4

For years Glock aggressively protected their look and name in the world of airguns.  Anyone even trying to copy their form would get a cease and desist order pretty much instantly.  If any company could get Glock to open up their name to go on the side of an airgun, it would be Umarex. This great blow-back co2 bb pistol feels like a Glock and has all the same switches and buttons as one too.  The trigger is exceptional, and the action is firm and feels great to shoot.

Umarex Forge

No. 4 – Forge

It’s great when an airgun just works and the Umarex Forge is one of those airguns.  The action is set in a traditional wood stock, which looks great. It’s powered by Umarex’s TNT Turbo Nitrogen gas ram system and is topped with a weaver rail for securely mounting an optic.  Additionally, it has an integrated SilenceAir moderator to help keep the shot noise down.  What’s appealing is the price point!  You are getting a lot of airgun for under $200.

Umarex AirJAvalin
Umarex AirJavalin

No. 3 – AirJavelin

This year Umarex delivered not one but two arrow shooters to the US market. For the number three spot, we’re going to call it a tie for both of them.  The Air Javelin is a co2 powered arrow shooter capable of hunting small game and pests.  Shooting proprietary bolts, which can be tipped with special razor-sharp broadheads, the Air Javelin is not only great for back yard target practice but can deliver a serious blow if needed.

The Air Saber takes things to an entirely new level.  Perhaps the most lethal airgun, dollar for dollar, currently on the market, the Air Saber shoots a 375-grain arrow (100-grain field tip) over 450 FPS!  And it does it with exceptional accuracy.  When you add a traditional hunting broadhead, there’s virtually no animal in North America that you could not takedown.  The Air Saber is PCP powered and delivers multiple shots from a single fill.

Umarex Gauntlet
Umarex Gauntlet

No. 2 – Gauntlet

Taking market share from folks like Crosman, the Umarex Gauntlet came on the scene a couple of years ago.  The Gauntlet was the PCP with an entry-level price but came packed with high-end features.  It is a multi-shot bottle gun fitted with an integrated regulator.  The regulator is on the bottle, not in the gun, which means that swapping bottles with different regulated output gives shooters a whole new setup.  You can make it what you need it to be for whatever you are doing by changing to the appropriate setup bottle.

Over the years, airgunners have modified various co2 guns in the same way, i.e., with regulated HPA bottles.  Umarex simply pulled all the pieces together and made it mainstream, delivering a stable, accurate, and extremely affordable platform in .177, .22, and .25 calibers.  It’s still a formidable airgun even in today’s market.  That’s why it’s our No. 2 Pick.

Umarex Origin
Umarex Origin

No. 1 – Origin

At Shot Show 2020, Umarex showed off the new Origin.  The Origin is a PCP, but with a gas ram trick up its proverbial sleeve. The gas ram acts as a booster to help the air in the pressure chamber to reach useful pressure more quickly and maintain it over more shots.  The effect is nothing short of remarkable.  But that’s not all Umarex did with the Origin.  The barrier to entry with any PCP is how to fill it and fill it conveniently.  To solve this, Umarex has added a hand pump in the box.  Everything, short of an optic and pellets, is already in the box and ready to go.

The whole system works together.  The hand pump allows shooters to get up and running without having to spend hundreds more on a bottle or a compressor.  The gas ram booster called the “Ever-Pressure Tank System” makes it possible to take your first full-powered shot with only 13 pumps!  Most PCPs would require 50 to 60 just to get up to that initial useful pressure.  From there, filling the Origin to max only takes a total of 140 pumps.  Again, a regular PCP may need 300+.  Not only does the Ever-Pressure system get you shooting more quickly, but it also helps you stay shooting longer.  It helps keep the pressure more even during the shooting cycle, delivering near “regulator” performance.

Now all of this tech is pretty cool, but what’s really cool is the price.  At only $350, the Origin is a steal. Add in a basic optic, some pellets, and new shooters are still under $500 to get an incredibly awesome .22 caliber PCP that will shoot sub one-inch groups at 50 yards out of the box.  It’s no wonder it’s our Number 1 Umarex Airgun for 2020!
