Top Must-Have Accessories

So you have a brand new airgun, or maybe you’ve got one with a few miles on it.  Either way, many shooting accessories can take things to the next level.  Whether it’s a new optic, bi-pod, compressor, or reactive targets for the backyard, there’s bound to be the next shooting accessory that makes your airgunning more enjoyable.  Let’s look at some of our favorite must-have airgun accessories.

There’s Nothing Like the Smell of New Glass in the Morning

The top airgun accessory category has to be optics. The sheer volume of options can be overwhelming.  From red dot sights to high-end hunting scopes and even thermal systems, airgunners have so much to choose from these days.  A newer trend to come to the market is the ability to add optics to airgun pistols.  We’ve been able to do this in the past with products like the 2240 fitted with the steel breech, but it’s been more of an afterthought.  Now we have products like the Barra Exterminator, a snub nose revolver, which ships with a Picatinny rail mounted from the factory.  It also has adjustable fiber optic sights, but that Picatinny rail is just begging for a Hawke Micro Reflex sight.

If you have a long gun in need of an optic and you are on a budget, then take a look at the Hawke Vantage IR line of optics.  They feature an illuminated etched glass reticle, adjustable objective, and lightweight design.

For shooters who have more to spend and want to make the most of their airgun up close and at long range, consider the Element Optics Helix 6-24×50 FFP.  This affordable professional optic delivers exceptional quality and durability for both target and varmint shooting.

Portable Compressors are the Way to Go

Owning a PCP airgun is only part of the solution to getting in some trigger time.  You need a way to fill it and keep it filled with high-pressure air. In the “old days,” we would hand pump between shooting sessions.  Then, we migrated to tanks and expensive compressors.  But today’s airgunners have another option in personal portable compressors.

Where the big compressors can run into thousands of dollars, personal compressors start at around $500. They are built to direct fill airguns and not bottles, but that’s not an issue because most, like the RovAir, can run off of 12v or 110v, making it an exceptional field partner for long shooting sessions out in the country.

And speaking of bottles, if you want to be truly portable, then a pony bottle could be the right answer.  You’ll need a way to fill it, but don’t worry, we have you covered there too. The Air Venturi Krypton can not only fill pony bottles but also large 98 cubic foot bottles all the way up to 4500 PSI.  The ideal setup would be a Krypton with a couple of bottles so that you are never without high-pressure air for your favorite PCP, whether you are at the shop or out on the range.

Paper or Steel Please

You’ve heard folks ask “paper or plastic” when standing in the checkout aisle; well, we want to know “paper or steel.”  What kind of targets do you prefer to shoot?  Some of our favorites are the Shoot-N-C targets from Birchwood Casey. These reactive targets clearly show the impact by using different colors on the target.  They are a great option when shooting with open sights or BB pistols. And they don’t just have boring bullseye targets.  They also have shooting games like darts and battleship. The Shoot-N-C targets make backyard shooting a lot more fun.

Now, let’s take a look at steel targets and what they bring to the table.  Not only do you get immediate feedback from your shot, but you also get movement.  A simple steel gong can tell you so much about the airgun you are shooting.  You can get an idea about its accuracy based on the pattern in the paint.  You can learn about its power based on how far it moves the target on impact.  And then there’s the sound of the impact of lead on steel.  There’s nothing quite like taking a .50 cal big bore airgun out to the range and slamming some steel targets.  It’s so much better than just punching paper.
